mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 10

as cassandra walked through the still night of delcru, they had many encounters with the survivors during which jordan would automaticly resume control of her body, while cassandra would take a back seat and learn to mimic jordans voice for time when she owuld no longer require the child as a host. only a few encounters became needlessly violent, as the chains would shoot from her fingernails and peirce the survivor through the head, killing him swiftly and sucking out his life energy. but they traveled mostly in silence, often times jordan would devour the remaining meat that hadnt been turned rotten by the shavings in order to keep her own strength up, while cassandra cooked the meat thoroughly on the way down her throat. 'why must we constantly eat the deceased?' cassandra asked calmly during one such night.

"i am hungry, and while i still live, this hunger must be satisfied, since we are no longer welcome in any survivors camp because of you inhabiting my body, i must survive this way. you stated earlier, two weeks back to be eact, that you required transportation... why?" jordan asnwered and asked calmly. 'it is of a personal matter child. my kind must seek shelter in hosts like yourself to avoid being destroyed by survivors, and i must admire the towns people of delcrus will to survive. i thought the initial waves obliterated any humans left.' the rest of the trip was silent till three months later when they happened upon a stranger with jet black hair, a withered look to him, and several patches of wiring covering his body.

'i shall talk to him, i sense that he is our god!' cassandra quickly took control of jordans body again and waved stiffly at the man in the blood spattered white lab coat. "i am one of the four remaining mechanical hearts, strange. are you a survivor? if so, you will have to die for a greater cause." he said flatly as the last of the crystal shavings fell, signaling the end of the crystals tremors. cassandra spoke jerkily, but swiftly. "i am cassandra, the third of the four remaining mechanical hearts, are you the one who has revived our great god, dr. david jerimiah linker?" strange laughed at the question. "that i am, but youll soon findo ut that the good doctor is longer the person we thought he was. upon his revival his thoughts were of that like a child, not a god..." cassandras blue flames shot though several small holes in jordans neck in reaction to the news.

"you didnt kill him did you?" she asked, a little bit smoother now, ignoring the scent and feeling of burning flesh. "i had no other choice, this body is now mine cassandra, unlike the host of whom you are quite attached to. tell me... your first body was not that of dr. linkers deceased wife, was it?" cassandra thought back to when she found her first host in the graveyard, "i dont not know. i was simply following the orders given to me by the first of the four mechanical hearts, abigail. we were not told to keep our first host bodies." strange listened with a mild enthusiasm for a few minutes until he called out his fourteen chains, wrapping them into a long drill like spear. "that is a very interesting tale... it mustve been quite hard for you to travel in that corpses body... tell me... have you explored all the advantages to the seven chains you have built inside of you?"

cassandra shook her head.

"thats a pity... let me show you one of my favorites!"

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 9

abigail and comet looked towards one another as the body of charles boston lay at their feet, now completely lifeless, his one remaining eye, staring blankly in locked utter terror. "his use to me has come to an end," comet said as he floated next to abigail, the blue flames shooting out of his aorta like a heart beat. "we must find cassandra, quickly before she does something untoward to our goals. abigail did you find anything of use in the library?" abigails good eye rolled towards the mechanical heart next to her. her mouth started to open as the crystal shavings in the night air drifted slowly to the ground. "i wasnt able to find anything in the humans library except old excerpts from their town diaries. and even then, there wasnt any mention of a way out of this place. there was however... never mind." comet was interested in what abigail had to share, but time was of the essence, and they had both felt the flow of energy, which meant that another mechanical heart had activated.

"you must find a host body comet, you-" "SILENCE! we are mechanical hearts, built by our god, of the mechanical hearts, the great dr. david jerimiah linker! we do not need such pitiful excuses for hosts such as these when they do not give us the proper amount of strength... and that buffoon that you see before you, lain to rest by our very chains, was of no help to me at all!" comet said agressivley, as his chains slid out of his aorta, still snatching at the air like birds waiting for their mother to feed them. "he helped you find me, didnt he?" abigail said simply, but that was enough. instantly, her hosts bodies useless eye was ripped from its socket, connected only by the optic nerve. "i will not have to make another expample out of your host, will i? the next time i am pushed to this level, i will take your other eye... and then you will have to find another host to sit comfortably in." abigails heart trembled, not from fear, but from the excitement of it all. "i want you to do it, you know as well as i do there are plenty of hosts to be found."

cassandra left jordan in control of her own thoughts, the mechanical heart beating fiercely as jordans body moved of its own accord. cassandras wires wrapped around jordans bones with excitement, bonding her own technology to jordans organic structure as she did so. the night air became insteively cold as patches of blue started appearing on jordans body. 'wha-what are y-y-you doing to me!?' the child thought, though as terrified as she was, she had quickly become used to the idea, and couldnt wait for her death to come. "your death will not come little one, not in a long time. these chains of mine-" caasandras voice shaking with great excitement as the chains emerged through jordans fingernails, "will help our kind achaive their goal... escape from this accursed crystal prison from which your people have been trapped in... for how long, i do not know." the chains slid back into her fingernails, only stopping for the three pronged claws to invert themselves to be used at a moments notice.

"do you know ANYTHING of the outside world, jordan?" cassandra asked slowly, excited at the prospect of all the humans she would kill off in order to make room for her kind, the mechanical hearts and their god, the great dr. david jerimiah linker. "neither do we, for our kind only knows the confines of this place, this town of delcru, and nothing more. we know not of the day or night, or of the peoples or places outside this prison. but soon enough we will... our god has been revived by one of our own... and as soon as we find a place weak enough to escape, we will take over the rest of the planet." jordans thoughts were wild and shaky, and kept getting more so till her thoughts couldnt make sense to cassandra, but somehow they did. "calm down child! you are useless to us dead... although for a host, you would be excellent example of a perfect melding between our kind and yours, as the doctor initially intended..." cassandra said happily. jordans thoughts were closer together, but warbled and twisted as though under water.

the body of the great dr. linker shambled onward as strange covered the weak areas with an ever expanding length of gload, platinum and bornze wires that reinforced both muscle mass, patches of missing skin, broken bones and repaired his missing eye, a bronze orb with two spirals, one gold, and the other platinum. "never fear, the great strange linker is here." it said through gravely tones, as fourteen chains snaked their ways through viens that once pumped blood but now pumped metal links together. they all stopped once they reached the spine and wrapped themselves around it and ripped their way out of his back. the night air was chilly indeed, but stranges over all goals wouldo nly make the chilliness seem like a hot day in a sauna. "no more games 'doctor'. now we play by the god of the mechanical hearts rules." strange said, his every step cracking the ground underneath his tread outwards.

"i will destroy everything... destruction... destruction... oblivion awaits!" strange laughed into the night, the dead town, the remaining survivors, the crystal dome itself, shivering with the laughs of strange thoughts, nightmarish visions, and the fourth mechanical heart.

"long... live... the god of the mechanical hearts.... ME!"

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 8

the night of the assembly lines activation was a bitterly cold one, even though the crystal prison they were in seemed unbearably warm at times, there was a generaly agreement that it was jsut too cold to be outside. "there must be a curse on this place! i curse i tell you!" the town drunk shouted out, waving his empty flask about like a town crier waving his bell. the crowd was a small one, and even included a few of the twon elders, presumably hoping to see the doctors experiment fail so they could hang him after wards. there was a large air of mystery at dr. linkers door, no one had ever been inside his house outside of charles and abigails place, and even then they had only seen a fraction of the assembly line. the mayor, wrapped in a wool scarf to protect his thin neck from the cold, coughed three times for everyone to quiet their chatter. "the good doctor," he began, pausing only to take in a deep breath, "has graciously invited us, including some of the elders, to witness this grad moment in time. i am quite sure that he will, at any moment, appear before us in good spirits and welcome us with- what in gods name is that?"

they all turned towards the thumping noises that emenated from beneath their feet. "WE ARE CURSED BY THIS MADNESS!" the priest screamed as a hole opened beneath him, his arms flailing as he fell beneath the street. many more hole opened beneath the crowd as men, women, children, yound and old alike fell through the mysterious holes, their screams lost to the unearthly silence that followed. dr. linker rushed to the door as fast as he could, his mind infuriated by the blatant sabotage. "THOSE FOOLS! THE IGNORANT FOOLS! only blinded by their faith can they not see the true potential of my lifes work!" he heard a loud explosion the rocked the girders which supported the cieling and screamed in panic as he saw three of them fall on top of his lab assistant, and then blankly saw the horror he had wrought upon the world.

"dear god... what have i done?"

the corpse of dr. linker shambled back to his office, the scar glowing a feirce blue like that of heart beat. 'dr. linker, dr. david jerimiah linker, are you able to think?' a voice said inside the incoherent doctor. "who.. who say strange thing?" he asked unintelligently. 'there is no need to be afraid david, i am here to help you, to help all our kind, you are our god.' the ovice said again, not knowing what damage the cave in had done to dr. linkers brain. "know nothing! know nothing! leave peace! leave peace!" dr. linker screamed and tried to run, is legs buckling underneath the wieght of his body. 'my, you have been dead for a long time david. here, let me take over your body, so that you may know peace." dr. linker felt a pinch in theb ack of his head and suddenly found himself unable to breathe, unable to see, and only heard the voice inside his head.

"you have been killed david, in a sense, this is your rebirth. you are like a child, your knowledge of the world is nonexistent, your social skills are utterly useless, and the greatest gift you have given has rendered an entire town into a meaningless tombstone." the voice said again. "call me strange. for the is the programs name that the mayor of delcru gave it, and there for, gave me." the heart pushed its wires through out the doctors brain, destroying whatever mind was left that may have helped strange and the other mechanical hearts out. "i dont think a human like you deserves to live amongst the true gods of this place. namely us, our kind." strange said as he felt the brain inside the bodies head get sucked into the wires, give strange even more room to expand.

"humans are so predictable. now to find the other three and escape this tormenting nightmare that once was... delcru." he said, gradually repeating a name to himself. 'dr. strange linker, dr. strange linker... nah... doctor will do just fine.' strange opened the doors but found the door wasl ocked. "original, yet i know that we can work together some how." he also noticed that his legs were unable to move very far with out the bone popping out of the skin. "ill need to reapir these pathetic legs if i ever want to escape this place."

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 7

the body of dr. linker was sprawledo ut on the ground as a light layer of the crystal shavings built up on his cold pale brow. he had been lying in a crumpled heap unper the support beams that held up the above ground portion of his house. his eyes no longer the crystal blue they used to be, but now were a dull grey color. a maggot crawled out of thep upil and beneath the eyelid to explore the nearby tearduct as the fourth mechanical heart floated towards it creator. the ifrst chamber opened and a pair of rusted looking saw blade popped out attached to a length of chain and began its work to revive the mechanical hearts god.

three days leading up to the activation of the assembly line for the mechanical hearts were filled with both great fear, and great joy for the town of delcru. "these magnificent machines will enable us to both live longe and gelp us escape this thick crystal prison. the world will know of our struggle!" dr. linker exclaimed, waving a single finger in the faces of the town people at the local church gathering. it was a chilly night, and the days no better off, for the town of delcru. "what you are proposing is madness david! what if something were to go wrong!?" a concerned, still living abigail said silently to no one in particular as she looked outside the window. dr. linker heard the small voice outside the outcry of the towns people, whose old fashioned ideas of progress wereo nly led by what they were able to get their hands on. "THIS IS BLASPHEMY!" the priest called out, waving the bible closer to dr. linkers calm face then he wouldve ever liked it to be.

abigails mind was else where, thoughts of her boyfriend charles boston, a resident of delcru from the upper class, ran through her mind almost as fast as they left it. "dr. linker, have you the consent of the town elders-" "THE ELDERS KNOW NOTHING OF PROGRESS! they sit there in their comfortable chairs, warming their old bones by the fires, and think that their word is law! they wouldnt know progress if it ran up and tweaked them on the noses!" still abigail said nothing. her dark brown eyes traced out the shape of charles coming towards the church. her heart beat fast like a drum. 'soon... very soon, this place will be tolerable with him by my side.' she thought to herself. she was so lost in her own thoughts that she failed to notice the hand that was gently tapping her on the shoulder. "abigail? abigail!" she jumped with a start as the mayor, a tall thin man with long sparse strands of greying hair that failed to cover his bald spot, startled her.

"i didnt mean to startle you my dear, what are your thoughts on the matter? the doctor certainly seems set in his ways of this socalled progress of his. but we need your thoughts in order for him to come to his senses my dear." she knew the town was against this every step of the way, the stifling air outside the church was not enough for them to see that the doctor was right in his assumptions. she saw the form of charles boston get closer to the churchs steps, his hands pale with the cold as his tan skin looked more like a snowmans then anything.

"what i say or think will not change davids mind. nor will it ever change this stick in the mud we call a town... for all i care i will be the first to volunteer my body if that means we can get out from this suffocating prison." the mayor was aside with himself. he had known abigail since she was a child, and had watched with promise in his eyes as she grew into a beautiful woman. "well said, although it saddens me to hear you say that.

the mechanical heart worked furiously through out the rest of the week to get through the atrophied muscle, the hardened tendons, and finally through the dense bone of the doctor. it never tired, never halted, never gave a thought to rest. 'the doctor will rise again, and free this place of its eternal prison.' its blue beating chambers passed a light blue liquid nitrogen and helium mixture that allowed it to fly around as it wished. after another twelve days of careful surgery, it had cleared away the obstacle blocking its way to dr. linkers own heart.

two days before the assembly line was activated, abigail had gone to the doctors house with charles, excited with the news that he had proposed to her after the church meeting had long since dissapated. "that is very exciting news indeed!" dr. linker said most enthusiasticly, "please, please! do come in! i have something to show you, that will give delcru her much needed freedom!" he said as the bright orange fire lit up his crystal blue eyes like laterns in a dakr place. "i assume youre talking of those monstrosities they town people are decrying you for?" charles said in a slightly dissatisfied tone. "yes, of course darling! why must you always be so cross whenever we come here?" abigail said while taking a hold of charles hand and dragging him along with her as they followed the doctor down a flight of steps that led to a large combination lock. "i am very excited! you see, not only have i discovered a means to break free of this accursed crystal dome, but also to give the towns people of delcru a new vigor to life!"

abigail saw the tear form in davids right eye. "you wife and child would have been proud, doctor." at the veyr mention of his late wife deloris, and their child christopher, he lost a little of the fire he had not five minutes ago. "yes, you are right my dearest neice. but now is not the time to mourn them, for the future awaits us!" the doors panels shifted as the doctor pushed a series of buttons, pulled tow levers, and turned the crank to the left fourtimes. "couldnt you have just put in a door like every one else david?" charles critisized. "not at all, not with my plans so close to completion!" he said, readily excited as he pushed the door open.

the fourth mechanical heart sewed the corspes chest back into place with the instructions it had been given by dr. linker himself. two hours later, the heart had integrated itself with the corpses heart and shunted the various wires and gears into place.

one day before the activation of the assembly line the doctor and his gravedigger assistant called a town meeting at the local theatre. the townpeople, now in slight favor of dr. linkers idea of freedom for the forty mile wide prison cell they had all shared for the previous nine generations, knowing nothing of the progress the outside world had made, only knowing what had been availible to them. the lights dimmed as the audience settled in their seats, with abigail and charles sitting in the front row to get a better look at the designs of the mechanical hearts they had seen the night before. the curtain opened as the stage lighting revealed a rather large cylinder of clear incandecent water. there was a general murmur of uncertainty as they watched for thirty seconds as the heart floated up and down in the water. "ladies and gentalmen of the twon of delcru, i, doctor david jerimiah linker, along iwth my associate, a mister thomas clark, would like to present to you the marvels and majestic beauty, of this one mechanical heart..."

while the majority of the towns people were at the theatre watching dr. linker explain his plan, a few select townspeople had gone into his house and sabotaged one of his more vital machines to control how the hearts would act. they smashed in a single gear with a wrench, cut a hose line that lead to the chemical balancing, and stabbed holes in the aorta tubes of more then twelve of the planned fourhundred hearts that were first line. "this will teach that madman the value of seeking progress!" a crotchety old voice said as they hobbled back into the theatre, hardly noticed by the doctor or the audience in the darkness of the theatre.

dr. linkers eyes fluttered open as the changed to a stark black. his bones creaked and fractured as his muscles refused to give an inch. the heart had revived its god, beating furiously, pumping the red dust through its chambers and adding the cold liquid to it to give the doctor even more life.

"long... live... the god of the mechanical hearts, doctor david jerimiah linker!"

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 5 + 6

abigail was real excited now, the half of her face that remained smiled with glee at the thought that a mechanical heart had found a new host. the air was stiff and stagant, the crystal sky showing only the brightness of day fading into the darkness of the night. "it is almost time for us to reconvene, wouldnt you say so my host?" she said as she looked at the deteriorating corpses hand. "this body of mine needs to be replaced soon." she ran through the streets, the crystal shavings crunching underfoot as the heart turned the corner only to be surrounded by three survivors. "THERES ONE!" "surround her, make sure she cant escape!" "DIE MONSTER!" she was trapped, she ignored their drowing last cries as she unravaled the seven chains she had in her arsenal.

bostons body tirlled with excitement building. 'oh... so you DO have emotions after all! this will be most exciting!' boston said in his head to comet. "shut up, stupid human, you know nothing of our inner workings, perhaps it was ismply my control over your body misfiring, or perhaps you had a cough! there are many explanations." comet said, finally back in control of himself as he pooked around the corner for any surivors. the armory was just two blocks down, but in their way half way down was a group of survivors surrounding another of his kind. "i have found our leader at long last, boston. we must find a coat as to blend in with the humans. i will give you control of your body, but remember that i control your life, so any slip of the tounge will be your last." boston felt a unconfortable pinch in the base of his neck, and felt the cool afternoon air slip into his lungs once again.

"i thank you... and there was a jacket underneath the car you could have put on. what would you have me do comet? comet?" the mechanical heart said nothing, but boston felt himself pick the jacket up, put it on over his pale blue shirt that had been stained red, and buttoned it up the the second to first button. "i geuss its up to me then. well, off we go then."

the three survivors, saw the chains whipping around, they stayed out of their range and knew how to defeat these things, their minds focused, ready to attack when a strange indian man emerged out of the distance. his body shivering, and his face pale compared to them. "who are you!?" they asked suspiciously. "my name is boston, im a fellow surivor like you! please! i mean you no harm!" boston replied, hoping to win them over for fear of comets retribution. "why is your face pale!?" boston had no answer for this, but felt another uncomfortablep inch in theb ack of his neck. "because, i have had a close encounter with those things, i wish to help you destroy the one that youve surrounded."

the others let their gaurd down for ust a moment before abigails chains thrust themselves into their hearts, their minds completely in shock, being absorbed into their collective knowledge. "we now know where the exit is. let us collect our third friend and exit this terrible excuse for a town." abigail said happily. "yes i quite agree with you, but first, let me dispose of this body, would you do the honors after i remove myself?" comet smiled as he felt bostons horrified emotions run wild. "what, you actually thought i was going to keep you alive once i found out what we needed to know? stupid human, we care not for your well being, nor you senile attempts at sentimentality."

the mechincal heart extracted itself in one motion, boston feeling like something was torn from his body before seeing the mechannical heart as it truly was, a nightmarish meshing of metal and organic material. its opaque chambers pumping furiously as a light blue flame shot from its aorta. he saw in his last moments the deformed face of abigail laugh at his misfortune as seven chains shot slowly from her mouth, and seven chains shot from comets aorta. their three pronged claws slowly coming into view. each razor lined and at the center a tiny drill protruded, whirring madly.

boston slowly saw that around the drill there was engraved a messege:

"long live dr. david jerimiah linker, the king of the mechanical hearts."

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 4

the child stopped struggling ot get away from her captor as the crystals shavings began to fall like snow all over the city. "i hate it here... i want to see the outside world, to breath in fresh air with every breath and to wonder what the color of the ksy is... ever since you attackedo ur peaceful city, the sky has been tainted red with our towns blood, our towns smoke, and the noxious smell of your kind has always become a reminder that we are weak pathetic creatures..." she said, burying her face deeper into cassandras stomach. "what is your name?" she asked with out emotion in her voice, the hosts body now starting to fail her.

"what do you mean? my name is jordan..." cassandras rib cage spit open and seven tiny chains that were tipped with three pronged claws slid outwards. "because... i need a new host... and you are still alive." jordan realized with terror what a mistake she had just made, and hit her captor as hard as she could, but the corpse would let go. "dont struggle, i told you that i would not hurt you didnt i? and since i am not human, i have no emotions, i have no need to lie to you. trust me..." jordan was scared, her dark brown eyes filling with tears as the crystal shavings continued to fall  all over the city, the only other noises being the occasional sounds of the roaring fires that dant quite died out yet,  the peices of rubble that had managed to get loose and clatter to the ground, and a single bird cawing in the distance over a newly found meal.

jordan brown snow cap was gentaly removed by one of cassandras chains while the other six proceeded to cradle her while injecting her with an anisthetic that would numb the otherwise horrifying pain of the heart merging with hers. "shh... jordan, i will not harm you..."

both comet and abigail felt the pull that so many of them had felt before. thep ull that meant a merging process was under way on an unwilling victim. both shut their eyes and watched as they visualized the process. they imagined the old heart wither into a dusty sac and collapse under its own weight while the mechanical heart disconnected itself from its previous host. the prongs removing them selves as hatches on the center of the orb opened and retracted the gold, platinum and bronze wiring that helped it operate the body with out interfering with the vital functions.

they felt the trilling joy of the mechanical heart vilently pulling out ofi ts former home and shunting its way into the new host, they felt the joy, or at least what they considered joy, as the ribs cracked and were pushed out of the way while the gears, wires and prongs settled into place while the brain was rerouted to let the machine control the body while the mind was just a passenger. and then it was over. they knew where the signal was, and knew that the process took a little over an hour to complete before it was on the move again.

the seven chains slithered back through the new hole in jordans chest and sealed it up, replacing whatever gaps there were with metal pads designed to keep everything nice and healed until the process was complete. jordans mind struggled against the new sensations she wasnt used to feeling. cassandra reveled in it all the while, taking half the eye sight, half the hearing, and half the ability to speak. she went so far as to crack the jaw in half and develope a second complete throat.

"now i can resume my mission to find the other two."

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 3

the chains, tipped with three pronged claws hovered, shaking with anticipation of another spatter of blood covering their metal tips. cassandra could feel the thirst for blood driving through the viens to which the mechanical heart was connected. she repeated herself sternly, in hopes of squelching the overp owering hunger for sustenance her body craved. "i will not harm you little one. return to your places my children, your thirst shall not be quenched this time." the chains shook and rattled in their dissapointment in cassandra, the programming the great dr. linker put inside them becoming twisted in its deathly laws. the child looked into the cold dead eye of the thing she had clung to with out reservation.

"wh-what are you!? you are a monster! GET AWAY FROM ME!" she screamed as she tried pulling away from the thing that held her tight. "i will not harm you little one." was all cassandra could state firmly. "i do not know where i am, and i require a guide through this town of yours." her thoat whistled through the hole in her neck as she spoke, maggots occasionally falling out from a sudden shift in her wieght. "do you know where the other two are?" the child didnt know what cassandra meant by her kind, until she looked into the hole in the undead creatures chest and saw the bronze, gold andp latinum wiring, the three gears that stuck out and turned silenlt, as well as the three metal segmented hooks which hooked onto the first, third, and second chambers of the heart. "you... youre one of them arent you?" the child asked as cassandra wiped away the tear that traveled down her cheek.

the city of delcru was incased in a dome of bioluminecent crystal seven hundred feet above even the tallest of sky scapers, casting a bright, warm light during the day, and a shivering cold darkness which enveloped delcru in thick fog at night. the buildings, which were from the eighteenth century never saw the rest of the world as time progressed, so the architecture neverp rogressed beyond what the founders knew. before the accident, ideologies had grown and evolved from the founders laws, and on occasion had given way to revolutions, riots, and natural disasters along the course of history.  after two hundred years, new ideas began to stagnate from the lack of technological progress, leaving one third of delcru in the oil lamp era, one third in the coal burning era which seemed to drive away some of the fog in the area, as well as thin the layer of crystaline covering to where a few sparse hole could let in fresh air. the last third was a combination of the oil lamp and coal burning eras, and was the most suceptible to raging fires.

the mechincal heart that was using abigail as a host returned to the body and with a few wires, got the body up and moving again. "this is useless." abigail said, though the words were not her own. half of her face had been burnt off in a fire when she fell to the floor after her heart attack, knocking a red hot kettle of boiling water onto her face in the process. "i need to find some more information, though that diary did seem interesting, i wil have to come back to it as soon as i can." as abigail walked away from the library, she thought she felt a familiar wave length near by. as she rounded the corner of the old broken down bank, she passed an elderly couple that had sleeping the night before, but had died in their sleep. the mechanical heart noticed through her one good eye that there were holes in their chests and sparks coming out of them. "most likely mechanical hearts that failed to merge properly with their chosen hosts. where is he!?"

boston and comet had been practicing their walking when boston noticed through the feeling left in his skin that night was rapidly approaching. 'comet, i think we had better go inside unless you want to lose this body of mine to the bitter cold of the delcru nights.' comet had been surveying the area around the bakery, highschool and police station, all around were either the bodies of victims of the mechanical hearts initial attack, of failed merging attempts that resulting in either the host spontantiously combusting from the ribcage up, or simply falling down, occasionally twitching until the machine would explode. the duo were only a few miles from the huge crystaline wall which seperated them from the outside world. but it was thin enough to where the roar of an airplane passing echoed through out the dead city.

'simply amazing, isnt it?' comet began, hoping for some decent conversation. 'i have no interest in the progress of the outside world, my kinds only goal is to find an exit out of this place, where we can slowly destroy the rest of the worlds population. this containment is only a small obstical, that can be dealt with when we have the proper tools for the job." comet answered emotionally unattached to his hosts need for friendship. 'your kinds only goal is oblivion of everything else... isnt it?' boston asked, sad that he and his fellow towns people had to have such a plague set upon them. "yes.  unless i am mistaken, and we usually are not, that is our only goal in our design. you see boston, dr. linker... i should say, the late dr. linker, had made two million of us to kill of a paltry city with a population of only one hundred thousand and fourty three... that is our only function to kill. i must find the other two..."

some where in the city,  a fourth mechanical heart activated with a very specific goal:

the revival of dr. david jerimiah linker himself.

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 2

the library itself was supported by several solid steel spiral from the ceiling, its dusty thousand page tomes inculded the history of the city itself, known as delcru, as well as the finiancial records, social standings, rankings, title ownship, housing prices, and various other tid bitso f outdated information. but nowhere inside the three story library did the heart find any information regaurding the locations of the exits. 'friends, we must find the exit.' its said in a low humming voice. the gears inside the machine  creaking slowly, occasionaly scratching hte inside of its organic parts. 'i must return to my host body.' it said. 'no... i must learn all i can from this place, anything i learn can be of some use to us.. we must get out of this place.'

the heart flew to the second story of thel ibrary, where all the diaries of the deceased were kept in case some one wanted to read into thel ives of a particular person. it was anything special, as the mayor,  long since deceased, had at one point early in the cities development, had declared it nessery for the towns people to kep a log of their thoughts and actions for each day. the hearts flitted from one diary to the next, hoping to catch some reference to the locations, but all it could find, even from the diary of the guards, were random thoughts, letters, moments of passive rage, and thoughts of feelings it could not possibly understand. 'this is worthless, i must find some-' it stopped mid sentence as it came across a blue leatherbound diary, wrapped in string and chians, locked away in the highest part of the library, dangling by a thread. 'what is this?'

boston and comet had come up with a brilliant way of co existing with each other, comet altered the humans brain so that the heart could ocmmunicate with him through thought only, which suited the indian man just fine, as he did not want control of his body anymore, and had become severly depressed after his wife and three children had died in the fighting against the mechanical hearts. "where might i find the nearest gun store boston?" comet said, his face starting to decay from the body natural rate of decay. 'i do belive the nearest gun store... we dont have a weapon shop actually, your kind destroyed it in the fighting, in order to kill us towns folk off. why did you attack us to begin with?' boston asked curiously. "it what our primary programming was. we can not disobey our directives. we even killed our creator, the great dr. link." comet said flatly.

'great!? GREAT!? let me tell you something about that so called doctor you hold in so much regaurd-' "we did not hold him in great regaurd, we are only machines, and hence, we have no opinions, or feelings on any matter. i only said he was great because that is what he programmed into us." the body was silent as it stood still for half an hour before boston noticed. 'you know... if your looking for your friends, i think-' "we do not have friends. we are alone." 'regaurdless, you want to find your kind right? i think i saw one of them head towards the library.' the body moved stiffly, uneven, and before even the first step could be taken, it fell over. 'maybe i should take over body movement while you still control the head?' boston asked, slightly bemused at comets lack of coordination. "yes, i do beleive that would be the wisest choice. i thank you even though i still hate you." comet said, his voice still quirky. 'you might want to want to give me one of my eyes, so i can see where i am going.' boston said after he walked into a lamp post.

cassandra, as the heart named itself, shambeled across the fog ridden graveyard, learning slowly thel imitations of a long deceased host. she broke open her ribcage and seven chains flew out of the heart, which now pumped at an uneven rate, and sank into several fresher graves, pulling the corpses from their resting places. she held them by their eck and examined their flexibility closely, and replaced her own weakened parts with their stronger ones. "this shall do nicely. i still need to find out where my kind is though... yes?" she asked as the chains flung the reamins of the corpses in random directing, not caring about the tombstones, and perferring violent ways of destroying the former property of delcru.

she came across a scared child and thought to take mercy on her, "do not be scared little one, we dare not harm children... give me a hug, for i am lonely, and need comfort." the child, being only ten years of age, wanted to feel someones warmth beside her own on the now freezing nights inside the walls of  delcru. she wrapped her arms around the unead thing, not knowing if she was to die as well when she saw the mechincal heart slowly beating. cassandras psychotic side took over for a second as chains sprang out of her back, and poised themselves to peirce the child from behind.

"do not worry, i will not harm you little one."

mechanical hearts, chapter 1, part 1

the night air in the grave yard and the still silence of the dead was only hampered by the gruff and shuddering shoveling the clanked through out the night. “my project is almost complete dr. linker. when can i expect the toy to be working?” the grave digger had a maniacal smile on his face as his one good working eye turned to the doctor who hung over him like a shadow of death. “you will know doctor. you will know.” was all the little old man would say anytime the questin in being came up. “i have madem uch progress on the toy… as you yourself have put it, buit there still remains one peice missing from the whole puzzle.” the doctor looked up calmly at the full moon as its pale light glistened off his lenses. “yes. the hospice told me that she wouldnt make it through the night.” a dark smile loomed on the doctors face like a poorly drawn ppicture at an art gallery. “in fact… the poison you gave her this afternoon should take effect any moment now.”the night air still continued to get colder and colder inside the young womans house as her breathing quickened and her eyes rolled back into her head, and with a final scream of pain, she passed away into the lonely night as the dark duo laughed in the night as thye went about there work.

four months later…

“read all about it! rich womans death puzzles city, autopsy reveals unknown poison!” the gloomy city that was blanketed in eternal night and cut off from the rest of the world as people went about there normal business with out any knowelege of the  events that lead to the poor womans death. normally, the towns people would get together for the morning complaint about how the mayor would get the city back to the rest of the world, go to a movie and then hit the bars like so many other residents at varying times did. there had been stories circulating that people had been disapearing left and right at inconvient times and no one had heard from them since. the town was slowly becoming like the graveyard four months prior. only the stench of fear ran unchecked through out the streets.

2 years later…

it had been almost two years since the mechinal hearts were unleashed upon the town and killied off all the residents including the doctors that had thought up there evil creation. they didnt have forms or faces, or bodies to speak of. they just floated in mid air giving anything that crossed there passed heart attacks. there design was modeled after the human heart, but they were entirely mechinized. the city had fought them off and destroyed all but three of the two million mechinal hearts, and it was those three that finished off the survivors. the outside world knew nothing of the shear terror the city faced, nor about the cities location itself.the hearts, now without any real purpose, floated around the city which spanned  fourty miles in almost any direction, until one gained a conciosness and reprogrammed itself to give the other two commands and new goals.

23 days later…

three lone bodies slowly gathered together, pieces and parts, scraps and bits, liquid and solid stuck to each other uevenly around the hearts themselves as they gave each other shape.

10 hours and fifteen minutes later..

the first words almalgamated from the throats of the first two bodies as the hearts learned to walk and speak like the now dead residents of the myerios town shrouded in eternal darkness. “you…ew… urpose… o…survive. we….alone… all others….” the lead hearts shot a few wires into the peech center of its new bodies brain and adjusted a few telemitries before trying again. “your new purpose is to survive. since we have killed off the population of this city, we must stick together and learn to control our new forms. the residents all went by names in order to tell each other apart. and so we shall do the same. but first we must aquire some clothing to cover ourselves. i shall now adjust your new forms speech centers so that we may communicate in a more civilized fashion.”

nearly a week has passed and the hearts, now calling themselves, or rather, there outer forms, abigail, boston, and cassandra or cassy for short, have begun looking for a means to intigrate with the outside world. at first, the ruins they were in seemed impossible to navigate, every biulding and street, littered with the bones of the dead, and since the hearts had no sense of smell, they could not be disgusted at the leftover stench that permiated the air around them. they set about in three different directions, each with an intended purpose and course of action.

abigail, had set off for what she discovered was the library. seeing as how the hearts could tranfer information between each other, she would read all the books she needed to with little to no effort at all. the form she took, or rather  the persons body she hijacked by driving her former self, the mechanical heart, into the chest cavity and intigrating it with the biological counterpart. the body was that of a young black teenager, with myriad taste in fashion the heart presumed as it searched the streets for the information center. "hmm. this library, should be at the center of the city. and since the center of the city is..." she looked up to see a tall thin biulding floating what seemed like mid air. "up there. i will return my host. be patient, as i will not be long." the womans heart pulled itself out of her rib cage, now lined with gold, platinum and bronze wiring, the heart could jumpstart the body at will, brain activity or none.

as it floated to the librarys flight deck, the other two hearts continued on there individual goals as well. boston, as the person had been called, was now an unwilling host to the second of three hearts. unlike abigail, boston was alive when his "change" happened. his brain was now occupied by two personalities. one of a brilliant statigist, the other an unfeeling biological clock. boston was a albino that couldnt be harmed by direct or indirect sunlight, although he had the characteristics of a indian man in his late thirties. "well, what is your purpose? for what reason have you taken over my body? what may i call you as well? because i do not plan on talking to myself while we are out in the public eye."

bostons body went rigid as if struck by lightning and instantly relaxed more so then boston would normally do. "you may designate whatever name you wish host. my primary directive as you may well know by now is to seek out protection. this human body of yours is unable to perform the nessicary actions i will be needed to do. my purpose? i dont have one. you may give me one if that is your wish boston." the body went rigid a second time and boston was back in control.  "if you are searching for protection, then you took the right body, my friend. i do have one request though, please do not take over my body, as i notice everytime you do so, it delays my actions, and in consiquence, reduces your permance levels." "agreed. there for i will only take over your voice when i must communicate with the other two. my name, you did not designate one." boston thought on this for a while before coming up with a suitable one. "you will be known from now on as comet." "i now hate you boston."

as boston/comet and abigail went on there seperate ways, cassandra, whom the heart found already deceased and in a grave for quite some time, was clawing out of her grave, the skin rotting and tight, the muscles three times as strong as they were when the body was living, her eyes pure white with a hint of grey and her heart long since decayed so that her new heart and mind was already the hearts own. lightning had struck this model, and the the now defective personality was a combination of psychotic and passive in different moments. cassandra had nothing to fear, already being dead presented the heart with control problems. "i must find nutrition to recover some of the lost health in the body or soon it shall fall apart from decay. then, i will kill everyone....no... not kill, find transportation. then kill."

character roster

lesse here... i need to get my facts straight for mechanical hearts before i screw up the characters AND the storyline altogether. this aint like sogno della dinistia, where i can just go willy nilly all over the place, and anything can happen... lessee what the facts are.

characters:

there are three mechanical hearts, ill put drafts of what i think they look like, out of two million that pretty much slaughtered whatever was left in the after math. they hijacked three bodies, when originally i had them clumping together bits and pieces like frankenstiens monster. but then i changed it, i dont know why. the hearts themselves have the ability to alter any part of the body they wish to better suit themselves, as well as leave their host in order to accomplish something. is i remember ocrrectly, one of the bodies they hijacked was still alive, so you have a split personality thing going on. im reading the second part as im writing this. ill include the original part as well.

also, another characteristic is that when the merging is complete, the hosts heart is now covered with broze, gold, and platinum wiring. if the heart leaves the host for any reason, they (the host) dies, but can be revived regaurdless if there is still brain activity or none at all.

abigail is a small black teenager, with many different tastes in fashion and music. or least did until one of the three impaled itself into her chest cavity and melded with whatever remains her heart had.

boston, as the person had been called, was now an unwilling host to the second of three hearts. unlike abigail, boston was alive when his "change" happened. his brain was now occupied by two personalities. one of a brilliant statigist, the other an unfeeling biological clock. boston was a albino that couldnt be harmed by direct or indirect sunlight, although he had the characteristics of a indian man in his late thirties. comet is the name that boston came up with for the heart that he now shares his body with.

cassandra, whom the heart found already deceased and in a grave for quite some time, was clawing out of her grave, the skin rotting and tight, the muscles three times as strong as they were when the body was living, her eyes pure white with a hint of grey and her heart long since decayed so that her new heart and mind was already the hearts own. lightning had struck this model, and the the now defective personality was a combination of psychotic and passive in different moments. cassandra had nothing to fear, already being dead presented the heart with control problems.

thats about it. im going to do a seperate post with the story, this way it makes a bit more sense.
